You know that magic moment when the sky turns gold, the light feels like it’s wrapping around you, and the whole world looks like it was made for falling in love? That doesn’t happen by accident—it’s all about timing and weather.
When people ask how to get those dreamy, cinematic photos, my answer always starts with: “Let’s talk about the light.” Because when and where we shoot can completely transform the look and feel of your session. Whether we’re chasing soft morning glow or dramatic coastal skies, the atmosphere plays a huge role in telling your story.
Let’s break it down.
This is the time right after sunrise or right before sunset when the sun is low, and everything turns warm, soft, and golden. It’s the holy grail for romantic, glowing portraits.
Think: backlit kisses, sun flares, and skin tones that feel kissed by sunlight. In San Diego, golden hour at sunset is especially magical since the sun sets right over the ocean. Yes, the literal West Coast love story.

Overcast skies give us softer, moodier lighting. The shadows disappear, colors pop, and everything feels more neutral and even.
These sessions have an editorial, timeless vibe. It’s like the world slows down, and we get to focus completely on you without the distraction of harsh light.

When the sun is directly overhead (typically between 10am–3pm), the light is intense and casts strong shadows.
This kind of lighting can be tricky—especially on the beach where the sun reflects off the sand and water—but it can still work in the right locations with the right strategy (hello, open shade or dramatic backlight!). That said, it’s not the best choice for soft, romantic portraits.

After the sun sets, we enter blue hour—a short window where the sky shifts to soft purples, pinks, and deep ocean blues.
It’s like the world is exhaling. This is when things feel really ethereal and intimate. If golden hour is the romance movie, blue hour is the final, emotional scene where everything comes full circle.

Here’s a fun detail that can change everything:
In San Diego, the sun sets over the ocean. That means all those golden reflections on the water? Pure sunset magic. But if we were shooting in Chicago, for example, the sun rises over the water, giving sunrise sessions that same oceanfront glow.
Planning for this can totally change the vibe (and direction) of your photos.
Sunset in San Diego

Sunrise in Chicago

If you’ve lived in San Diego for a while, you know the marine layer is real. It’s that thick, cloudy fog that rolls in from the ocean—especially during late spring and early summer mornings (“May Gray” and “June Gloom,” anyone?).
It can stick around until mid-morning or even early afternoon, depending on the day.
What does this mean for photos? Well:

Tide charts might not sound romantic, but they’re crucial when planning beach sessions.
If your dream is barefoot beach photos with lots of open space, we’ll make sure we’re shooting when the tide is on our side.

San Diego isn’t known for being green year-round—but during and right after rainy season (typically March through April), the landscape comes alive.
Grassy fields, full leaves, wildflowers—this is the best time to schedule if you’re going for those vibrant, nature-inspired shots.

All of this—light, tides, weather, season—shapes the tone of your session. It’s not just about what’s pretty. It’s about what feels true to your vision. Whether that’s golden, romantic, and warm… or soft, moody, and editorial—we’ll plan intentionally to get you there.
We’ll talk about your vibe, your outfits, the location you love, and then choose the time of day and season that supports it best.
I might not be able to control the weather (if only!), but with great communication and a little flexibility, we can absolutely bring your vision to life. Weather And Timing Influences Photography in numerous ways, the key is planning with intention—and trusting that sometimes, even unexpected skies can create something magical.
