When we planned this Fletcher’s Cove maternity session, the weather app had other ideas. Clouds all evening, it said. While we showed up ready to make the most of a moody, overcast sky, the sun had no intention of hiding. What unfolded instead was one of the most stunning sunsets I’ve seen over the Pacific; warm, golden, and completely unexpected. It was the kind of evening that reminds you why you never cancel because of a cloudy forecast.
Nestled in Solana Beach, Fletcher’s Cove is one of those spots that feels a little tucked away from the busyness of California. The bluffs, the soft sand, the way the coastline stretches in both directions; it offers so much visual variety within a relatively small area, which makes it incredibly versatile for a session. You can go wide and dramatic with the cliffs, or intimate and close with the water lapping nearby.
For maternity sessions especially, there is something deeply fitting about the ocean as a backdrop. The vastness of it, the sense of something new on the horizon, it mirrors the moment in a way that feels poetic rather than posed.
We had mentally prepared for soft, diffused cloud light; which is genuinely beautiful and flattering in its own right. But as the evening wore on, the clouds began to part and the sky caught fire. Shades of amber, rose, and gold reflected off the water and wrapped everything in the kind of light you simply cannot manufacture. It was a gift.
Moments like this are why I always say: show up anyway. Overcast skies can surprise you. The forecast is just a suggestion, and the best sessions often happen when the weather decides to do something unexpected and wonderful.
One of my favorite details from this session was the use of ultrasound photos as a prop. It may seem like such a simple idea, but the images it creates are so meaningful. Holding that little black and white picture of your baby you haven’t met yet, right there against the backdrop of the ocean at golden hour is breathtaking. It bridges the before and the after in a way that nothing else quite does.
Bring your ultrasound photos to your session! They photograph beautifully and add an incredibly personal, emotional layer to your gallery. Whether you hold them, frame them between both sets of hands, or tuck them into a meaningful spot in the scene; they tell a part of the story that a baby bump alone simply can’t. It’s one of those details you’ll be so glad you captured.
This Fletcher’s Cove maternity session is a beautiful reminder that the best sessions are the ones where you come prepared, stay open, and let the evening surprise you.
