Some engagement sessions begin with a short drive across town, but Haley and Manny’s story started with a road trip from Arizona to the California coast. They chose one of San Diego’s most popular coastal locations for their session. This Sunset Cliffs engagement session was filled with soft ocean air, dramatic cliffside views, and the kind of color palette that only a cloudy evening along the coast can create.
When most people think of Sunset Cliffs, they picture vibrant orange sunsets and golden light spilling across the ocean. While we did have a few brief peeks of sunshine throughout the evening, the clouds ultimately became one of the best parts of the session. Rather than chasing a dramatic sunset, we embraced the atmosphere that the overcast skies created.
One of my favorite things about photographing at Sunset Cliffs is how the location transforms depending on the weather. On cloudy evenings, the ocean seems deeper in color, the cliffs become more dramatic, and the entire landscape takes on a cinematic quality. Throughout this Sunset Cliffs engagement session, the blue tones from the sky and water created a stunning backdrop that felt both timeless and artistic.
Haley and Manny were incredibly easy to photograph because they simply enjoyed being together. We spent the evening exploring the cliffs, taking in the views, and allowing plenty of space for genuine moments to unfold naturally. The combination of movement, laughter, and quiet moments created a gallery that described their unique love story with intention.
To add another layer of nostalgia and artistry to the session, we also incorporated a roll of film. Film photography has a unique way of preserving emotion and atmosphere, especially along the coast. The subtle grain, natural colors, and beautiful depth created images that felt timeless while complementing the digital photographs perfectly.
Some of my favorite frames from the evening came from the film roll. The rich blues of the ocean, the soft cloud cover overhead, and the occasional glimpse of sunlight translated beautifully onto film, creating photographs that feel both romantic and enduring.
This Sunset Cliffs engagement session is a reminder that beautiful engagement photos don’t require a perfect sunset. Sometimes the most memorable galleries come from embracing the conditions you’re given and allowing the natural beauty of a location to shine through. The clouds gave us mood, texture, and incredible color, while the film photographs added a layer of nostalgia that made the gallery even more special.
For couples considering engagement photos in San Diego, don’t let a cloudy forecast discourage you. As Haley and Manny’s session shows, overcast skies can create some of the most beautiful coastal imagery imaginable. Between the dramatic cliffs, rich blue tones, and timeless film photographs, this Sunset Cliffs engagement session became a beautiful celebration of their story and the exciting season ahead.
