Claire and Dallin knew they wanted their Liberty Station engagement session to feel fun; not stiff, not overly traditional, but full of personality. From the start, they were drawn to a playful retro vibe, something colorful and cinematic that felt like stepping back in time.
Claire took the lead on styling and came prepared with outfits that perfectly matched the vision. Think effortless nostalgia that was oh so intentional. Styling is such a huge part of bringing a concept to life, and having outfits that align with the overall vibe instantly elevates a session from “cute” to cohesive.
To match their retro vision, I found the perfect location: Corvette Diner in Liberty Station. This iconic San Diego spot is known for its full-on 1950s aesthetic—neon signs, checkerboard floors, vinyl booths, and classic Americana details everywhere you look. Located in the heart of Liberty Station, the diner is a local favorite and feels like a living time capsule. Every corner offers visual interest, which makes it a dream location for photos that feel nostalgic but bold.
Of course, no Liberty Station engagement session would be complete without props, so we ordered a milkshake and fries to use during the shoot. Props like these do more than just add visual interest; they give couples something to interact with, helping them relax and move naturally. Holding a milkshake, sharing fries, or leaning into a booth creates real moments and movement, which always translates beautifully on camera. Props truly help bring a session to life and make it feel like an experience, not just a photoshoot.
We walked around the diner and captured photos in several different areas, each with its own personality; from the colorful bar to the retro “subway” section, and even the photobooth. Changing up spaces within one location is such a great way to add variety while keeping the story cohesive. It felt like we were moving through scenes of a movie, each one adding to the overall narrative.
To finish it all off, we leaned fully into the colorful, cinematic feel by incorporating flash for a more editorial look. Flash added contrast, drama, and that unmistakable retro edge—giving the images a polished, magazine-worthy finish while still feeling fun and authentic to Claire and Dallin.
Their Liberty Station engagement session was the perfect reminder that when you combine thoughtful styling, a strong concept, meaningful props, and the right location, you get photos that feel alive. Claire and Dallin didn’t just take engagement photos; they were writing the next chapter in their book!
