Props to bring a creative photoshoot can elevate your entire session. This shoot had all the perfect elements of creative shoot—an incredible location, a fun couple, and a classic car that set the tone.
In collaboration with @sdclassiccarrentals, we set out to create something timeless, romantic, and creative. Cue Elizabeth & Lane— they were the cutest models! From the second they stepped into frame, their playful chemistry and genuine love for one another brought the shoot to life.
We also chose a high point in San Diego for our location, where the view stretches across the skyline all the way to the ocean. It’s one of those spots that feels cinematic even before you lift your camera. Add in a vintage ride, colorful edits, and golden hour light? Chef’s kiss.
This session was also a chance to play with props in a creative way—and I brought a lot. You can see all the pieces I used in this Instagram reel, but here are a few favorite examples that you can incorporate into your own shoots:
Polaroid/ Vintage Camera- Nothing says nostalgia like an old-school camera. Use it as a handheld prop for your subject to interact with. Then shoot a few actual Polaroids during the shoot. They double as both an activity and content.
Creative Idea: Have your couple “photograph” each other mid-session. It breaks the ice and captures movement naturally.
Notebooks- Whether it’s a leather journal or a scribbled notebook, this prop can suggest storytelling, planning, or personal expression. It’s especially fitting for creative or quiet moments.
Creative Idea: Use an open notebook with handwritten vows, sketches, or letters for couples to one another. Then have your subject journal mid-shoot for a natural, introspective feel.
Deck of Cards- Cards instantly bring a sense of playfulness or vintage charm. Great for lifestyle, couple, or indoor shoots.
Creative Idea: Lay them out on a blanket or table for a styled picnic shot. Or, capture a couple casually playing a game, laughing, and leaning in close—instant chemistry.
Hair and Makeup Items- This works well for behind-the-scenes photos or getting-ready shots.
Creative Idea: If you’re going for editorial, stage one of your subjects applying their makeup in a mirror.
Cassette Player- A perfect nostalgic prop with a ton of aesthetic appeal. This is the perfect prop to set a retro tone, visually or emotionally.
Creative Idea: Let it play in the background during the shoot to help set the mood. Then, photograph your subject holding it, rewinding a tape, or listening with headphones.
Sunglasses- A classic prop for a reason. They instantly add attitude, mystery, or a casual-cool feel.
Creative Idea: Use them as a mid-shoot switch-up. Start without them, then put them on for a few shots to shift the mood. They also work well when perched on the head or tucked into a shirt collar for subtle styling.
Atmosphere Spray- Subtle haze or fog can completely shift the mood of a shoot—adding depth, softness, and a cinematic edge.
Creative Idea: Use it indoors near a window to add a dramatic backlit haze, or with flash for a moodier effect.
Newspaper- Newspapers add texture, graphic interest, and can be styled in both modern and vintage ways.
Creative Idea: Use them as a backdrop, wrap flowers in them, or have your subject casually reading one.
Therefore, props shouldn’t feel forced, they should feel like an extension of the story you’re telling. Even simple items can become powerful when they’re used with intention. Think about mood, movement, and texture. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to experiment!
