There’s something beautifully unpredictable about photographing the coast in San Diego. Some evenings bring glowing golden light and dramatic sunsets and other evenings, the marine layer settles in, the sky turns soft and muted, and the entire beach feels calm in a completely different way. Alyssa and Chris’ cloudy beach engagement session at Terramar Point was one of those evenings. The sky stayed cloudy from start to finish, but honestly? It could not have fit their session more perfectly.
Instead of fiery sunset tones, we leaned into the softness of the evening; the cool coastal colors, the texture in the clouds, and the quiet intimacy that overcast weather naturally creates. The result was a gallery that feels timeless, cinematic, and deeply romantic on both digital and film.
Cloudy beach engagement sessions often get overlooked because people worry about missing a “sunset.” But sessions like this are proof that beautiful light doesn’t have to come from direct sun. In fact, overcast skies can create some of the most flattering and emotional imagery. The clouds acted like a giant natural diffuser, giving us soft skin tones, dreamy contrast, and rich texture throughout the entire session. Film especially shines in conditions like this; subtle colors, creamy highlights, and all the nostalgic depth that makes coastal sessions feel effortless and alive.
What I loved most about Alyssa and Chris was how fully present they were with each other. No pressure for the perfect sunset. No worrying about the weather changing. Just the two of them embracing the moment together along the shoreline. We wandered the beach slowly, letting the evening unfold naturally; barefoot walks along the water, quiet moments tucked into the cliffs, wind in Alyssa’s hair, and waves rolling in behind them. The moodiness of the clouds added so much atmosphere without taking away from the warmth between them.
Sessions like this are a reminder that “perfect weather” is completely subjective.
Some of the most meaningful images happen when conditions are imperfect in the best possible way. And for couples considering a coastal engagement session: don’t be discouraged if the forecast looks cloudy. San Diego’s marine layer can create an incredibly romantic backdrop that photographs beautifully, especially on film. The tones become softer, the emotion feels more tangible, and the entire gallery takes on a more editorial, storytelling feel.
Alyssa and Chris’ session at Terramar Point is the perfect example of how a cloudy sunset shoot can still feel stunning, intentional, and full of life.
