Steph and Matt’s magical San Diego elopement will stay with us for a long time. From the intimate outdoor ceremony to the romantic stroll down to the beach for sunset, every moment was full of joy and excitement about the start of their new life together. We decided to shoot with both digital and film which gave us a mix of warmth and flare (especially when the champagne came out).
The day started off at the San Diego Courthouse for an outdoor ceremony under the iconically blue California sky. We headed over to Balboa Park for bridal portraits, where our newlyweds were framed by beautiful columns and sun peaking through at all of the right moments.
One of my favorite parts of capturing an elopement is the freedom the couple has to make the day their own. From a quick outfit change to a stroll down the beach because the sunset was just too good to miss, Steph and Matt’s San Diego elopement represented the most important part of a wedding – the marriage. Dancing around on the beach with these two will forever be one of those moments as a photographer that makes me think, “Wow, I love my job”.
As we made our way back to the Valencia Hotel, where they were spending their first night as husband and wife, our newlyweds never missed a chance to get swept up in a kiss. The night ended with a bottle of champagne and a vintage style wedding cake for two.
When I look back on this beautiful day I am struck with the realization that we often forget what a wedding day is about. Even as a photographer, I catch myself sometimes missing the little moments in order to get that “perfect shot”. Steph and Matt’s day in San Diego will always be a reminder for me to simply be present, and let the couple lead the way.
