Some shoots are planned down to the tiniest detail, others unfold in the moment. This one was definitely the latter. It was a rainy day in San Diego, the kind of weather that makes most people cancel plans and stay in with a blanket. But not Claire and Jack. They had made a pact to make the most out of their session no matter what the forecast was calling for. So instead of rescheduling, we grabbed our gear and headed out for a rainy cinematic couples shoot in Carlsbad. This spot is a hidden gem in the San Diego area.
The skies were heavy and grey, and the beach was nearly empty. The air felt still, like something cinematic was about to unfold—and spoiler alert: it did. We brought along a few props to heighten the atmosphere, including some vintage lamps that gave the shoot a surreal, film-like quality. The soft glow against the gloomy sky made everything feel dreamy and intimate, like a scene from a story you don’t want to end.
Not to mention, Claire and Jack actually pulled off the lift scene from Dirty Dancing. In the middle of the beach. In the rain. It felt like the ultimate cinematic experience. For the final edit, we leaned into the moody vibe the weather gave us, crafting a blue-toned color grade that enhanced the romance and emotion of the session. This session perfectly reminded me to lean into whatever cards life deals. When you embrace your surroundings, they can create the most magical moments, ones you’ll cherish for years to come.
